Magnesium-ion Battery : ウィキペディア英語版 | Magnesium-ion Battery
Magnesium-ion Battery (sometimes Mg-ion battery) is a technological development currently under research that may advance the battery industry by integrating multivalent ions like Magnesium (Mg) ions instead of Lithium (Li) ions in the rechargeable battery. The objective of this development is to produce a battery that is twice as efficient in power delivery, cheaper, and also easier to manufacture as Mg-ions are much more abundant than Li-ions. The rechargeable battery industry has previously been dominated by Li-ion based batteries, which is a monovalent element, and to move towards the Mg-ion based batteries would pose as a much safer alternative because of the dendrite-free electroplating, high volumetric and gravimetric capacities of the Mg-ion.〔 == Rechargeable Battery Mechanism == Rechargeable batteries work by moving the positive ions to and from the positive electrode and the negative electrode to discharge and charge, respectively. In general, all batteries have a positive electrode, negative electrode, and an electrolyte. Electrons and ions are exchanged between the electrodes while only the ions flow through the electrolyte. In order for the system to produce power, the electrolyte acts as an electric insulator to force the electrons to flow through the external circuit. And in comparison between the Mg-ion based batteries and the Li-ion batteries, the Mg-ion based batteries are much more potent because the Mg-ion carries two positive charges, and therefore is able to move twice as many electrons as opposed to the Li-ion. That being said, the chemistry today still cannot be completely efficient and the designs remain incapable of remaining optimal after all the charge-discharge cycles. With a limited battery life in each battery, it's important to use a chemical element that would best optimize the charge delivered per battery life.
